Noorlunga (2) 23.6.1847; renamed Noarlunga circa 1862. The letter states "... We have nearly got the Tramway completed. I expect it will be finished tomorrow ..." [Addressed to prominent businessman GD Sismey, who was a landholder on the Onkaparinga. In 1853 funds had been made available for construction of a wooden tramway from the town (Old Noarlunga) to the coast. In 1857, it was proposed to extend the Tramway inland by means of a bridge across the Onkaparinga River]

2045 c image1853 (June 22) chatty entire to the writer's brother headed "San Francisco" endorsed "per G Ship Damblat" and presumably carried per favor across the Pacific with fine 'SHIP LETTER/ [crown]/DC*7/1853/ MELBOURNE' transit backstamp in red, rated "3" crossed-through then "5" for inter-colonial delivery, very fine Adelaide GPO arrival of JA11/1854 on the face, some aging mainly within. : Very few pre-1860 items have been recorded from America and this is one of the earliest. It is telling that Dale Forster had nothing this early in his famous collection of mail between America & Australia.

PO 14.7.1839. [Thomas Atkinson arrived 12.11.1839 and was one of the earliest settlers at Willunga, 47km S of Adelaide on the Fleurieur Peninsula. He was an early adopter of new farming techniques & equipment. The letter is to an absentee landlord offering £400 to purchase land from him. It highlights the difficulties of attending to such matters, directly or via an agent, from opposite sides of the globe]

2052 c image1854 (May 24) large-part entire with the letter written in old German, to "Mt Barker Township" with largely very fine Mordan-type 'BALHANNAH/=SOUTH-AUSTRALIA' cds (rated RRRR) and rated "2", similar 'HAHNDORF' transit backstamp (RRR) of the same date, minor blemishes. According to the Handbook, there was no Balhannah Post Office operating in 1854. Martin Walker states that Balhannah (3) closed 25.8.1853 with operations transferred to Hahndorf, and that the earliest record of the fourth Balhannah PO is 1.1.1855. This item clearly shows that both Balhannah & Hahndorf were operating as separate POs in mid-1854.

2059 c image1855 (Nov 19) complete 'ADELAIDE PRICES REALISED' over the name of Edward Stirling, to Oxfordshire "p James Baines/Via Melbourne" with very fine Perkins Bacon London Printing 2d rose-carmine SG 2 strip of 3 (margins just clear to large) tied by dumb cancels of the GPO, Liverpool (MR4/56) & London transits the latter also tying the stamps, indistinct 'CHIPPING NORTON' arrival b/s. Remarkably fine for such flimsy paper. Edward Stirling was born to a Scottish slaver & Jamaican mother of African descent. His father financed his pastoral interests in the Colony, where he arrived in 1839. His woolbroking & produce business was established in 1855, so this is a very early Prices Realised. Only a year later, he entered into partnership with Thomas Elder, which later morphed into Elders Ltd. The firm financed early copper mining operations at Moonta & Wallaroo.
