as "William A[...]/Ferrym[an]". The Wellington Ferry still operates. In fact, those intrepid adventurers, Eastick & Watson, made the perilous trip earlier this year]

endorsement "PO/Macclesfield" at upper-left and "paid 4d" in red, light just legible strike of the 'MACCLESFIELD/[crown]' mailbag seal (rated RRRR; the ERD), GPO arrival cds of JYx2/1850 in blue and indistinct 'PAID' handstamp in red, endorsed at
right "opened by [...?] Berry/but not for him", a second strike of the GPO cds of JYx9/1850 on the reverse & apparently returned to the sender, vertical filing fold. Macclesfield PO 23.6.1847. Meadows PO opened 18.7.1850, only three weeks after this
letter was sent. [Both the manuscript and the seal are those illustrated in the Handbook]
The writer speaks of paying £1 to have an impounded horse released "...The poundkeeper said that she would have brought £20 at the sale...The miller at Noarlunga is offering 4/- per bushel [for wheat] but I would much rather take it into Adelaide if
the merchants are giving as much..."

1850 (Aug) OHMS front endorsed "free" in red with legible to fine strike of the rare curved 'KOORINGA' handstamp (rated RRRRR; ERD),
GPO arrival cds of AUx6/1850 in blue and largely very fine strike of the '[crown]/FREE/AU-6/184-' datestamp (probably CrFree-5 but with month & day slugs; the '184-' was part of the permanent inscription) in red. The Handbook states that the PO was
renamed from Burra Burra 1849 and Martin Walker states it was "before 29.3.1849". However, the manuscript "PO/BB" [Burra Burra] is recorded until 28.12.1849. Perhaps the name change was on 1.1.1850; renamed Burra 1.12.1939. [The Handbook records the
Kooringa marking from 30.11.1850 to 14.2.1851 only. John Griffiths' example of 30.11.1850 on entire sold in 1992 for £495]

1852 (early) stampless front probably from England to "Mr Williams/Soda Water Manufactory/ Morphett Street/ Adelaide" with GPO arrival
cds of JY15/1852, endorsed "Not here/Left", 'ADVERTISED/ JY ' and superb 'UNCLAIMED' handstamp both in red, light soiling. Neither marking is recorded in the Handbook, although they clearly are Adelaide markings. We believe the 'ADVERTISED' was
produced as a crowned-circle of similar pattern to the early 'FREE' & 'PAID' markings; it appears that the frame & ornament were removed as there are no traces of either but the text is fully legible. Only two pre-stamp Advertised items have been
recorded.

1852 (Aug 16) stampless entire headed "Taibach" signed "H Le Powell" to "James C Coke/Messrs Stevens & Coke" with a largely superb
strike of the large framed-oval 'FORWARDED BY/JB WILCOCKS/ SHIPPING & EMIGRATION/AGENT/PLYMOUTH' handstamp on the reverse, carried per favor and placed into the mails on arrival at Adelaide where GPO cds of FE9/1853 applied and rated "6" inland
delivery, light soiling. [Taibach ('Little Houses' in English) is a hamlet in South Wales, developed early in the 19th century as housing for coalminers. James B Wilcocks was the most successful of seven emigration agents in Plymouth. His efforts,
funded by the South Australian government, contributed to the disproportionately high levels of migration from Devon & Cornwall. The large cachet is much scarcer than the earlier unframed type: see Lot 2016]
