Cox's Creek: 21mm 'COX'S CREEK/12SP/63/S.A' (rated RRRR; the only recorded cover) light but complete strike (and another on the
reverse) with Rouletted 2d red tied by largely very fine Diamond Numeral '37' to cover to Adelaide. PO 1858; renamed Bridgewater 1.4.1873. Numeral reallocated after Crystal Brook (1) closed 1857. '37' is common but this is the only Cox's Creek
cds/numeral 'tie' recorded on cover. Ex John Bell: sold at our auction of 14.11.2014 for $475.

Cygnet River (1) on Kangaroo Island: unframed 20mm 'CYGNET RIVER/11DE/70/S-A' (rated RR; ERD by 5 years) superb strike on cover to
"Railway Hotel/Port Adelaide" with De La Rue Perf 10 2d tied by superb Diamond Numeral '293' (R), the reverse with 'TALISKER' (RRR; ERD), 'NORMANVILLE' (R) & GPO transits & Port Adelaide arrival, flap removed & a little battered but presentable, a
postscript has been written under the flap, minor defects. PO 1870; RO -.10.1910; PO 12.9.1912. The only recorded usage of '293' on Kangaroo Island. Three other examples of the cds are recorded, all on much later Shierlaw fronts.

East Wellington: unframed 21mm 'EAST-WELLINGTON/AP3/63/S.A' (rated R) very fine strike & light but obvious Diamond Numeral '98' cancel
(C, but the only recorded pre-1866 numeral/cds 'tie' on cover) tying Perkins Bacon Rouletted 2d pale red to cover, Port Adelaide arrival of the next day, no evidence of redirection but with GPO cds of AP4/1863, flap faults & minor blemishes. PO
5.11.1856; renamed Wellington East -.1.1866. The cds remained in use until 1895. It is rated R across both periods but must be much scarcer used before the name change.

light but fine arrival (RRR) the next day. A marvellous group of rare markings. PO 1.10.1852. ['Tapton' was probably the name of a property, likely closer to Kanmantoo than Callington, where a PO opened in 1857]

Saxony "via Brindisi", poor 'P.A. RAILWAY' transit & 'ZEITZ/12.8/91' arrival backstamps, vertical fold at left. TO 28.9.1878; PO -.11.1878. [From the 'phantom' UPU period: on 1.1.1891, South Australia introduced a common 2½d overseas letter rate. Six
weeks later, it was revoked - except for mail to Great Britain - and the 6d rate reinstated. On 1.10.1891, the Colonies officially joined the UPU and the 2½d rate was reintroduced. The sender appears to have underpaid 6d x2, the 2d short-payment not
being detected]
