LotNo. Symbol Lot Description Estimate in AU$'s
2201 c image1889 (Jan 11) cover to "Down Shire Rode/Newry/Irland" [sic] endorsed "via Plymouth" with Perkins Bacon '8 PENCE' on 9d olive-grey tied by 'KOORINGA/S.A' 23mm squared-circle (rated RR) and very fine 'REGISTERED/No. ("33")' curved seriffed handstamp alongside, 'PLYMOUTH/ FE24/89' cds, London 'REGISTERED' in red on face '& NEWRY' backstamp both of the next day, part of the flap missing & small repair at the top. The rate was 4d per ½oz plus 4d registration fee. Carried by the Orient Line 'Lusitania' ex Adelaide 21.1.1899; arrived Plymouth 28.2.1899. However, this item must have been landed at Naples and forwarded by rail, the mail arriving Plymouth 24.2.1889. On 1.1.1889, a new route via Plymouth, operated by the Orient Line to its home port, was introduced at 4d per ½oz, compared with the via Southamptonrate of 6d. It lasted until the uniform 2½d Australia-UK rate was introduced on 1.1.1891 exactly two years later. Tabeart states (Vol II p24) that "...this reduced 4d rate was not used much and letters are hard to find". He gives an example of the 'Austral' sailing on 18.3.1889 carrying 212 bags of mail, 207 of which were landed at Naples at the 6d per ½oz via Italy rate and only five (4% of the total) being landed at Plymouth. No wonder 4d-rate covers are very elusive, and registered mail must be rare. See also Lots 2203 and 2208]

From -.4.1888, the rate to most European countries including the Netherlands was set at 6d per ½oz via all routes. A scarce pre-UPU destination: even from Victoria, Ben Palmer records only 15 items.

Per 'Lusitania' ex Adelaide 27.5.1899; arrived Plymouth 3.7.1899. On 1.1.1889, a reduced 4d rate to Plymouth per Orient only was introduced, lasting until 1.1.18981 when replaced by the 2½d uniform rate. Items franked at this rate are very elusive: see also Lot 2201.

2206 c image1890 (circa) piece of bluish card (193x106mm) endorsed "Book parcel/ ... /Addelaide" [sic] at upper-left, to Nairne with De La Rue Perf 10 2d orange pair tied by a indistinct GPO duplex of indeterminate date, very fine strike of the scarce 'MISSENT/TO-ADELAIDE S.A' handstamp (presumably applied in error), minor blemishes. An unusual piece: perhaps it was sent somewhere other than to Nairne, and the handstamp applied to explain the delay. The rate was double 1d per 4oz book parcel. See also Lot 2097.

2207 c image1890 (May 10) cover with colourless 'BANK OF AUSTRALASIA' embossing on the flap, to "Colonial Bank/Kingston/Jamaica" endorsed "via Frisco & Panama" with scarce franking of Perkins Bacon Perf 10x11½-12½ 4d purple & De La Rue Perf 10 6d blue tied by 'SHIP MAIL ROOM/ 1 /S.A - S AUSTRALIA' duplex, superb 'KINGSTON/ 1E /JY13/90/JAMAICA' squared-circle arrival backstamp, minor blemishes. A rare pre-UPU destination from Australia: even from Victoria, Ben Palmer records only one item, of 27.7.1891. The trans-Pacific via Panama rate from Victoria to Jamaica at this time was 1/- per ½oz, and that via Brindisi was 9d per ½oz (Palmer does not record a Victorian 10d rate to any of the British West Indies).

2208 PSE image1890 (Aug 22) usage of Postal Card 1d violet to "Dundee, Scotland" uprated with De La Rue Perf 10 2d tied by 'SHIP MAIL ROOM/ 1 / S.A - S.AUSTRALIA' duplex, personal message states "Have just arrived. Will write as soon as I am settled ...", a couple of tiny marks. A very scarce example of the 3d Great Britain via Italy postcard rate. When the reduced Long Sea Route letter rate of 4d per ½oz was introduced on 1.1.1889, so for the first time were postcard rates (these previously being subject to letter rates). The postcard rates were set at 2d via the Long Sea Route and 3d via Italy. All Australian Colonies except South Australia & Tasmania issued 2d & 3d Postal Cards to meet these rates - very difficult to find correctly used in period - which lasted until the uniform 1½d Great Britain postcard rate commenced on 1.1.1891.

2209 c image1891 (Jan 14) homemade wrapper endorsed "Newspaper/only" at upper-left, to Prussia, Germany endorsed "via Brindisi" with rare solo franking of De La Rue Perf 10 3d olive (corner fault) tied by 'MT GAMBIER/S-A' squared-circle (SC2; ERD), light almost horizontal fold well below the stamp, minor repaired tear at the base & another at the back. A very scarce item. From 24.1.1876, the newspaper rate to Germany was 2d up to 2oz, only 1d more for up to 4oz, then 2d for each successive 2oz. Very few De La Rue 3d covers have been recorded.

2210 c image1891 (Jan 21) cover with large colourless embossing 'AW SANDFORD & COMPANY/PRODUCE/ SALESMEN/AND/AUCTIONEERS/GRENFELL ST ADELAIDE' on the flap, to Sweden with scarce franking of De La Rue Perf 10 '2½d' overprint on 4d green plus 1d blue-green & 2d orange pairs tied by 'SHIP MAIL ROOM/ 1 /S.A - S.AUSTRALIA' duplex, no arrival markings. Rare usage of the surcharge in the first month of issue. [Alexander Wallace Sandford moved the headquarters of his thriving produce business from Melbourne to Adelaide c.1881. He was a member of the Legislative Council 1895-1902] The Australian Colonies had been advised that they would be admitted to the Universal Postal Union (UPU) from 1.1.1891, with a universal overseas letter rate of 2½d. However, admission was delayed (until 1.10.1891), and the new rate revoked by mid-February, except for mail to GB. Any letters from this 6-week period are very elusive and those to non-British destinations are rare.

The rate to India was halved in -.4.1882, from 1/- to 6d for ½oz. This rate was restored after the prematurely introduced 2½d overseas letter rate from 1.1.1891 was revoked in -.2.1891, then again reduced on 1.10.1891 to 2½d.. Mail posted to non-British destinations in that interim 7-month period is very elusive.

Russian Cyrillic arrival cds, light vertical fold at left. The rate was 2½d per ½oz. Perhaps the 1d green was added in error instead of another '2½d.' green, or in the belief that 'a little extra' might be required to get the item to this remarkable destination. [Rhine Villa 1.4.1880; renamed Cambrai 1.7.1918 (to expunge the Germanic name) is in the Mount Lofty Ranges E of Adelaide. Sedan is 10km N of Rhine Villa.
