1877 official cover with 'Post Office Department/...' imprint at upper-right with POD 10c black (Scott Cat US$400 on cover) tied by an
indistinct cancel, to Virginia opened a bit roughly clear of the stamp & repaired with archival tape, overall light soiling. With the enclosed POD Commission on high-quality laid paper (436x360mm) appointing "John SR Burwell" as Postmaster at
"Finneywood" and signed "DM Key" at lower-right, POD wafer in red at lower-left has caused a light stain across the signature otherwise the document is in exceptional condition. A marvellous Post Office artefact.
David McKendree Key was a colonel in the Confederate Army and, later, 30th Postmaster-General of the United States, serving 12.3.1877 to 1.6.1880. He was the only Democrat in Rutherford B Hayes' administration. Finneywood VA is barely a dot on the
map. The earliest online reference we could find to the town is for 1895: this document is 18 years earlier. Richard Helbock in "Post Offices Vol VI: Mid-Atlantic" states Finneywood PO operated 1877-1937, so Burwell was almost certainly the first
postmaster.
