467 c image1½d red endorsed "2d/Paid/PM/LHI" in pen Lord Howe Island Provisional ACSC 92ch on cover to Toorak (Vic) with 'LORD HOWE ISLAND/22AU/1930/NSW' cds alongside, small closed tear at upper-right not affecting the stamp or markings, Cat $3750. The only known usage of an endorsed KGV stamp from the first despatch after the rate increase to 2d on 4.8.1930. RPSV Certificate (2023). The ACSC states in footnote 2 to the 1930 Stuart Centenary 1½d that "For the first despatch to the mainland, dated 22 or 23 AU 30, the Postmaster's endorsement was applied after affixing the stamp to the cover, and in effect cancelled and tied the stamp, with the Lord Howe Island datestamp applied alongside, sometimes not even cancelling the stamp". The ACSC intimates that the 1½d Sturt was the only stamp available on the island at this time, stating in footnote 11 to this issue that "The usage of 1½d King George V stamps was very small, but almost certainly entirely philatelic, and occurred after supplies of 2d stamps had reached the island". This item disproves that assertion, and clearly evidences that endorsed KGV stamps were part of the first despatch. Arthur Gray's commercial cover with KGV 1½d red tied by '20SP/1930' cds - not from the first despatch - sold at our auction of 30.10.2015 for $7735.
