262 cTO imageOVERPRINTED 'OS': ½d orange Inverted Cliché consequently with the Overprint Inverted as ACSC 69(OS)c (SG O128a), being the central unit in the lower row of a marginal block of 10 (5x2) from the right of the sheet, & thus tête-bêche with the three adjoining units, repaired tear in the margin only, the stamps very fine & well-centred, CTO with Perth cds of 13JE33 cds, Cat $27,500+ for a used single. Ex TE Field, Jack Kilfoyle (but not offered in his auction sale) & Julie Resch. Last sold at the Macray Watson auction of 25.7.1995 for $990. The affected unit is not an officially inserted stamp to replace a damaged unit, which is the only way in which the ACSC states that Overprint Inverted is found. Because of the orientation, the key unit also has the watermark inverted, which is not recorded for this issue. In the Field sale of 15.11.1948 (purchased intact by Kilfoyle) the item was described as "... extremely rare, only three examples reported to exist" and estimated at £100-150 (about the same as each of the four KGV 1d die proofs offered in the sale). Macray Watson stated that "Our opinion is that the unit in question is a complete forgery - design, wmk & opt - and perhaps an unrecognised Sperati". Scott Starling Certificate (2023) states "expertly altered".
