affixed - presumably for registration, the R label being affixed to the package - & tied by a second strike of the cds. Ex 'Tillie Mitchell': sold at our auction of 29.8.2020 for $659. [2/3d does not conform to the prevailing parcel rates. However,
the intrastate rate for a parcel weighing between 6 & 7lb was 2/- + 3d registration]

1930 (Feb 18)cover from a Hobart business to England carried on the SS Comorin, the stamp washed off and 'DAMAGED BY IMMERSION/IN SEA WATER I.S.' boxed h/s (Gwynn & Hoggarth Type 6) on face, characteristic
immersion faults. [On 12/3/1930, while the ship was at Colombo, a fire was detected in the hold. It was extinguished by flooding the hold with seawater. Mail from Tasmania is quite unusual.]

franking) tied by large-part strike of the huge undated oval 'CHIEF PARCEL OFFICE/MELBOURNE' canceller (error; No 'S') to parcel-front (270x195mm), a couple of minor wrinkles & blemishes. The rate was 1/- for a package weighing between 1 & 2lb, sent
more than 30 miles from place of posting: Couangalt is 31½ miles NW of the GPO [Sold at our online auction of 20.5.2021 for $431]

(undercatalogued at $1250 for a solo franking) tied by 'AIR MAIL/ 1 SYDNEY 1 ' cds, vertical fold & minor blemishes. The rate was Empire letter 2d + internal airmail 3d + 1d late fee. Ex 'Tillie Mitchell': sold at our auction of 29.8.2020 for $2035.

1936 (Nov 9) parcel tag to Jamberoo (NSW) with KGV 1d green & Kookaburra 6d Typographed tied by 'SOUTH ANNANDALE/NSW' cds, PMG's Dept NSW 'THIS wrapper was received without contents ...' black/pink label affixed
with 'DEAD LETTER OFFICE/18/NOV/36/SYDNEY' rubber cds in red, a couple of minor blemishes. The reference to 'without contents' presumably meant that the tag had become separated from its parcel.The merchandise rate was 1d per 2oz x7.

1937 (April 24) commercial usage of 'DIE BRUECKE/GERMAN-AUSTRALIAN WEEKLY' newspaper wrapper to Tonga with KGV 2d red tied by Sydney parcel roller cancel, on arrival festooned with various Tin Can Mail cachets
including 'Inwarb/Tin Can Mail/Niuafoou' ['b' for 'd'] on face, a few minor faults. Walter Quensell was the Postmaster and applied these cachets to mail addressed to himself!

1938 (c.) Electrolytic Refining & Smelting Co complete parcel tag endorsed "130oz" to Canadian Bank of Commerce at San Francisco with scarce franking of CofA Wmk 2/- maroon & £1 grey tied by 'WOLLONGONG/NSW' cds,
the whole unusually still within the lead sheath in which such labels were posted. The rate was overseas letter 3d for the first ounce + 2d for each subsequent ounce x129 = 261d = 21/8d, the difference of 7d comprising 4d for 2oz for the sheath plus
3d registration (the R label being affixed to the package). Ex 'Tillie Mitchell': sold at our auction of 29.8.2020 for $1915. [NB: the ACSC prices the £1 on cover with other stamps at $2500, compared to $4000 in the previous edition. There is no
justification for the lower figure]
