83 image 1883 Fine but w/ surface imperfections and environmental damage on the rev. By the mid-1870s, the price of silver had fallen low enough to result in millions of previously-hoarded silver coins to flood back to the channels of commerce. This resulted in a virtual cessation of newly-minted quarters and half dollars from 1879 thru 1890. The 1883 half is a scarce one, but with a mintage of 8,000, it is a bit more available than the surrounding issues. (Image) (imageb)

84 image 1889 Good. Another scarce issue for the 1880s. (See comments for the previous lot.) Compared to all the other surrounding issues, the mintage of the 1889 is a robust 12,000, nonetheless it is seldom offered. (Image) (imageb)
