It is more than I ever would have believed… As I write these lines, the cannon is groaning but Paris is immense and the shells can only reach the far quarters of the city situated near the ramparts."

CARRIED ON THE ILL FATED FLIGHT OF THE RICHARD WALLACE WHICH WAS LOST AT SEA OFF ARCACHON. ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL BALLOON FLIGHTS.

The balloon crashed in the ocean with some mail which washed up at La Tremblade, Ars-en-Ré and La Rochelle with frankings floated off.
