A LOVELY EXAMPLE OF THE BARNABAS BATES ILLUSTRATED "CHEAP INLAND AND OCEAN POSTAGE" PROPAGANDA COVER.
Barnabas Bates, who served as New York's assistant postmaster between 1833-36, later
began working for the New York Democratic Party and the Equal Rights Party. He served as an advocate for reduced postal rates, which made public communication possible for a greater number of people. In the 1850's, Bates adopted the Elihu Blurritt
practice of using illustrated envelopes to further his reform proposals for America. (Image1)
