On June 8, 1872, the law authorizing the Postmaster General to provide postal cards was signed by President Grant. The
Third Assistant Postmaster General then requested the bank note companies and card suppliers to submit proposed designs and data for the first U.S. cards on June 25th 1872. H.L. Lipman submitted three postal card designs to Gen. W.H.H. Terrell on
