John D. Spreckels was owner of the Oceanic Steamship Company (OSSC) and son of Claus Spreckels. J.D. Spreckels and Bros. Co. acted as general agents for Pacific visitors with "Splendid American Steamers" of the Oceanic Steamship Company that left San Francisco every four weeks bound for the "Milky Way of the Ocean" that included Samoa, Tonga, Tahiti and Rarotonga.

The Catholic mission at Kohala, on the Big Island, was established in 1841 by Father Arsenius Walsh. Father Damien would serve as the pastor there from 1865 until 1873 when he volunteered to attend to those with leprosy (Hansen's disease) who had been exiled to Kalaupapa on the island of Moloka'i.

The addressee, Ernest Franz Gambs, was a popular stamp dealer, who also dealt in rare coins. He published the California Philatelist magazine from 1882-1900.---At the time of this cover, Charles Scharf had just sold his interest in the stationers business to his partner Henry Johnson, allowing him to keep the company name, and corner card, intact.

A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 10¢ RED OVERPRINT ERROR. ONLY ONE SHEET OF FIFTY WAS ISSUED.

Two errors of the 1893 Provisional Government Overprint Issues were made. One sheet of the 10¢ Red Brown, normally overprinted in black, was overprinted in red (Scott 61B) and one sheet of the 6¢ Green, normally overprinted in red, was overprinted in black (Scott 66C). Most of the 10¢ examples from the only sheet of fifty produced, are centered into the perforations at top. It is believed that eight examples were destroyed from the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and that less than forty examples are in existence.

A RARE PAIR OF THE 1893 12¢ DOUBLE RED OVERPRINT ERROR, SHOWING THE SHIFTED IMPRESSION IN BOTTOM SHEET SELVAGE - AN OUTSTANDING PROVISIONAL GOVT. VARIETY.

Only two sheets were doubly overprinted. This pair with the selvage capturing the shifted overprint is a striking example, as well as an extremely rare multiple.
