LESS THAN FIVE RECORDED SPECIAL DELIVERY LETTERS FROM HAWAII WITH MIXED FRANKING.
The only reason for required mixed franking of Hawaii and U.S. stamps during the U.P.U. period
was for special delivery mail. The 1882 5¢ Hawaii stamp paid the U.P.U. letter rate to the U.S., and the 10¢ U.S. special delivery stamp paid the special delivery rate.
The addressee, J.P. Madau, was one of several brothers who
arrived in San Francisco from Germany in 1851, starting a quite successful tobacconist business there. The sender, H.J.Nolte, ran a similar tobacco enterprise in Honolulu as the proprietor of the Beaver Saloon on Fort St. (Image1)
