Cornelius Comstock originally owned Cornelius Comstock and Co., a company engaged in the California clipper ship trade and in commission merchandising. On January 1, 1864, he partnered with Robert Simonson to expand the business and renamed it the Comstock Clipper Line. This line and partnership carried passengers from New York City to San Francisco for nine years, but the business dissolved on May 31, 1873.
