1141       imageJeff Barracks, 4 Augt 1828. Dateline on folded letter written by Brig. Gen. Atkinson w his endorsement at top "Brig Genl Atkinson" and addressed to "Colonel W. Neil, 1st Reg. Infy, Fort Crawford" [Wisconsin] carried privately "Fav of G. Scott" at bottom left, letter reads in part, "Genl. Scott reached Cincinnati on the 22nd. under an order from the Sec'y. of War. The Gen ' l. has not changed his mind on the subject of rank between himself & Genl. Macomb. In resuming his Comd. of the dept. he places himself at once in a situation to receive orders from Genl. Macomb, and as he intends to disobey them, things must soon reach a crisis. What the result will be is difficult to say. An arrest, suspension from command, or a dismissal must follow a disobedience. Hardly the first, as the President has said no court will intervene to try the question…", signed "Yours with esteem, H. Atkinson", docketed "Genl. Atkinsons letter 4th August 1828", Very Fine and an excellent letter., ex-Beals.

Henry Atkinson was a United States Army officer serving on the western frontier during the War of 1812 and the Yellowstone expedition. With Benjamin O'Fallon, he negotiated treaties with Indigenous nations of the upper Missouri River in 1825. Over his career in the army, he served in the West, the Gulf Coast, and in New York at the border with Canada.

1142       imageSt. Charles M.T. Oct 23. Slightly blurred black cds with manuscript "25" rate on lengthy folded letter to Vermont; datelined "St Charles 29th Oct 1820" and reads, in part, "…Missourians in the valley of the Missouri and Mississippi know what is meant by 'hard times'…Our first State Legislature is yet in session…the settlements do no cease at Charriton - but continue to the Indian boundary…" signed Harry Noble, the four-page letter has lots of other local goings-on mentioned, prices of goods, etc.; trivial edge wear, F.-V.F., Based on manuscript uses from St. Charles both before (through late 1819) and in the years that post-date this cover, it is believed this is the only known example of this handstamp.
Estimate; $500 - 750.

A WONDERFUL MISSOURI TERRITORY COVER THAT HAS BEEN OFF THE MARKET FOR DECADES.

Missouri Territory was carved from the Territory of Louisiana on Dec 7, 1812 and existed for nearly nine years until the State of Missouri entered the Union Aug 10, 1821.

1144       imageThomas H. Benton (Senator from Missouri). Manuscript free frank on 1820 autographed letter signed folded letter to "Military Academy, W. Point, N. York", no postal markings, only a simple "Free. Thomas H. Benton" frank, dateline "Washington City Dec 13th 1820" with contents discussing the potential for Missouri to enter as a state, in part, "…Missouri is still hanging up in the H. of R. but I feel confident that she will get through eventually [and did so, Aug 20, 1821]…many propositions for retrenching expenditures are submitted among others a project for abolishing the military academy…Thomas H. Benton"; internal signature damaged from wax seal with tape repair and "on" missing of Benton, Very Fine.

FUTURE SENATOR BENTON MAKES MENTION OF WHAT WOULD EVENTUALLY BE KNOWN AS THE "MISSOURI COMPROMISE".

Thomas Hart Benton, nicknamed "Old Bullion", was an American politician, attorney, soldier, and longtime United States senator from Missouri. A member of the Democratic Party, he was an architect and champion of westward expansion by the United States, a cause that became known as manifest destiny. Benton served in the Senate from 1821 to 1851, becoming the first member of that body to serve five terms.

Blue straight-line postmark tying 1861 3¢ rose, horiz. pair (65, couple minor perf flaws) on cover to Stephenson Bridge, Niagara County, N.Y., Very Fine and a very rare straight line postmark, Shellen & Dunn report this postmark used from May 5, 1866 to Oct 7, 1867, this likely being an 1866 usage as the 3¢ rose is not grilled. Six examples recorded in their census.

Very fine small purple cds with matching star-in-circle killer tying 3¢ Bank Note to cover to San Diego, California; includes original contents datelined "Blackfeet Agency, Montana March 21st, 1877" and reads, in part, "…now I am pretty sure from the delays in Mail transportation at this end, you will not receive that letter in time to take the action I intended and meet me. I have some hope you may Telegraph me to Helena when you will be there…from Franklin to Helena (stage) $62.50 time 5 days and one night meals on the road $1 each, only 25 lb of baggage allowed…John Young."; light edge wear with a few corner bumps, Very Fine, Shellen & Dunn report this postmark used from Feb 1, 1877 to Dec 10, 1879 with a total of six examples recorded in their census.

June 22/52. ornate black spread eagle, stars, and leaves handstamp tying 1851 3¢ dull red (11, faults) on buff cover to Parsippany, New Jersey with a second stronger strike of the black handstamp postmark at lower left, manuscript date applied also tying stamp "June 22/52", with original enclosure, in part, "…Fort Kearny June 15th/52…We see some Indians, plenty of adventure and a good deal to amusement…I will write you at length from Fort Laramie about the fourth of July…Edgar Z. Smith"; light horizontal creasing at top, F.-V.F., this being the only example in black (others in blue)., realized $11,000 hammer in the Risvold auction (Spink's January, 2010, Lot #437).

AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE OF THE FANCY FORT KEARNY O.R. "OREGON ROUTE" EAGLE HANDSTAMP OF THE FOUR EXAMPLES RECORDED, COMPLETE WITH ORIGINAL TRAIL LETTER.

By the 1850's, the commonly called Oregon Route, or O.R. was formerly known as the Oregon Trail, that being the route of Oregon emigrants. This letter was sent with the the Woodson Contract mail for Independence, Mo.

Nohart was located on the Iowa Indian reservation and was named for a chief of the Iowa tribe. Both territorial postmarks from Nohart are illustrated.

Sept 30, 1863" postmark & matching "Paid" on yellow stampless cover to Wisconsin, with enclosure discusses harsh weather, crop prices, and tough times on the frontier; second is cover with manuscript "Austin N.T. May 20th 1863" manuscript postmark with postmaster's free frank "free HW Parker, P.M." (Hiram W. Parker became postmaster Mar 6, 1863 and acted as such until the office closed on Apr 14, 1864) on brown cover to Wisconsin with enclosure datelined with similar contents to previous letter; last is 3¢ entire postmarked "Bellevue, Neb. Jul 6" [1864] black cds with target killer to Wisconsin with enclosure datelined "July 3d 1864" with family health content, etc.; some cover faults, Fine, Winter's book on Nebraska Territory Postal History records only five manuscript postmarks from Austin, with the two offered in this lot not being included in the Winter census.

Partial black cds on cover franked with 1863 2¢ Blackjack (73) cancelled by target killer, with manuscript "Due 2" (the correct rate of 3¢ for mailing to California was underpaid by 1¢, which was doubled to 2¢ due for the unpaid portion) addressed to Sacramento, Cal.; original enclosure datelined "Bunker Hill August 31st/64" and reads, in part, "…You ask me if I have really struck it rich. I wil tell you. I can make grub & pay my assessments & that is more than every one can do here you bet…pretty good paying thing if it was not I would draw out at once for some of the owners are God dam Rebs. They are the meanest Devils out of hell…it costs me about nine dollars a week for grub & devilish tough at that, it is a very healthy place Vermont cannot beat it for any thing but girls. They are verry scarse I have not seen but two women for five months nor had a square meel since I left Virginia City…J.W. Eggelston,"; cover edge wear with tattered lower right corner, F.-V.F. and an excellent letter, A "blackjack" use from Nevada Territory is rare, this was the subject of an article in the Postal History Journal (Jan. 1873) by Dr. Milgram.

Bunker Hill (the dateline of this letter) was a very small offshoot mining camp located in Kingston canyon, 27 miles south of Austin, on the east slope of the Toiyabe Mountain. It was founded early in 1863 and existed until the latter part of 1864, when the new town of Kingston was founded some two miles down from Bunker Hill at the mouth of Kingston Canyon.

ONE OF THE FINEST EXAMPLES OF THIS RARE NEVADA STRAIGHT LINE POSTMARK.

Carson City was still a part of Utah Territory at this time. Since Nevada was formed from portion of Utah territory in early March of 1861, early postmarks still showed the "U.T."
