Blurry strike of cds ties 1857 3¢ dull red (26, creased) on cover to Massachusetts, flap torn, included is lengthy letter written by Pikes Peak Miner en route which is datelined "Lawrence, K.T. May 8th, 1859" and written over the next couple of days, excellent contents which talks of violent weather, mines and outfitting a team as well as daily life, Very Fine.

Two strikes of small cds including one tying 1857 3¢ dull red on cover to New York, forwarded with "New-York Nov 22 1860" cds and barred killer on second 3¢ 1857 adhesive for forwarding postage to Boston; enclosed letter datelined "Bluemont, Nov 4, 1860" with contents, in part, "…We are having good religious times in Kansas to make up for temporal lass. Next Tuesday is our Territorial election comes off & also the Presidential for all the Nation. The Lord guide the hearts & the hands to vote right on that important day." from one brother to another; trimmed slightly at right just taking off a few perfs from the right-hand adhesive, still Very Fine.

Five covers all with manuscript postmarks of Wakarusa, Kansas on covers addressed to Massachusetts franked with manuscript cancelled 1857 3¢ dull red or 1861 3¢ rose adhesives, including: Wakarusa K.T. Jan 26, 1859, Nov 10, 1859 and Nov 12, 1859; Wakarusa, Kan. Sept 6th, 1864 and Dec 13, 1864, generally Very Fine, Territorial covers from Wakarusa are rare!

Kansas Territory was formed May 30, 1854 with Kansas becoming a state on Jan 19, 1861; therefore, three of the covers offered in this lot are from the territorial period and two statehood.

1140       imageFort Leavenworth, Mo. May 8. Black cds with matching large "X" rate handstamp on blue folded letter to Connecticut, datelined "Fort Leavenworth Mo. May 4th 49" reads, in part, "…William Clare late of Company B 2nd Artillery under my command when on its way to Santa Fe New Mexico died of the Asiatic colera near the Kansas on board the steamer "St Paul" on it way to this Place- April 30th…H.L. Kendrick,", very light toning at edges, Very Fine.
Estimate; $300 - 400.

The 2nd Artillery was scheduled to escort the new Indian agent at Santa Fe to his post, leaving from Fort Leavenworth. They departed on May 16, 1849. Apparently a number of letters like this were sent, as a report to Washington said "All companies, from the effects of cholera and other causes before starting, are much reduced in numbers, and present very little more than skeleton forms."
