In early 1861 designed CSA Battle Flag, W.P. Miles served as Mayor of Charleston 1855-57, elected to 35th-36th Congress's until retirement in 1860, later served as Confederate Provisional Congress, member of the Confederate Congress from 1862-64, Colonel on the staff of Gen. Beauregard, President of Unv. of S.C. at Columbia, died May 11, 1899.

Witherspoon, Wateree Mounted Rifles, Capt. Boykins Co." and addressed to Miss Ellen R. Tweed, Camden, So. Ca., minor corner wear, still Very Fine.

The Wateree Mounted Rifles were later incorporated into the 7th South Carolina Cavalry (March 1864). They surrendered with Major E. M. Boykin at Appomattox Court House.

2253       imageConfederacy, Coosawhatchie (S.C.) Feb 13. Manuscript postmark with "Due 5" on soldier's due cover to Col. A. P Calhoun, Pendleton, Anderson Dist., S.C., manuscript soldier's endorsement "Sent by Capt. J. C. Calhoun, 2nd Battalion Cav. S.C.V.", Very Fine.

Captain John C. Calhoun enlisted on May 6, 1861 (by the Executive of S.C.), in Pickens District. His Battalion was consolidated into the 4th Rutledge Rifles in May 1862. In May 1862 he reenlisted for the duration of the war as Captain Co. C. He served throughout the war but was sickly for most of 1864 and returned to duty Nov. 24, 1864. He was listed as a deserter on Feb. 14, 1864 but was sick and sent to the General Hospital in Richmond and the hospital in Huguenot Springs, Va.

Nov. 18" double circle and matching "Due 6" in circle, F.-V.F., a very rare and popular town with only three reported (Stets & Teal 6), one of the great South Carolina Postmark Rarities, signed Kimbrough.

Evidence of a CSA stamp applied at upper right, which may have been applied later by a collector as the Confederate States of America postage was already paid as indicated by the "Paid 10" handstamp (somewhat obscured the the double circle postmark).
