Sep 12 88" duplex, slightly reduced at left, Very Fine, this is the only recorded example of the steamboat marking, Illustrated in Milgram.

768     1124 imageFrom Steamer Planter (Mississippi River). Superb strike of large Steamer handstamp on orange cover to New Orleans, manuscript "freight", small corner repair upper left, usual pinholes as found on the Carroll Hoy correspondence, Extremely Fine.
Milgram No. 1124; Estimate $300 - 400.

The "Planter" of 343 tons was built in 1860 of 343 tons and was owned in part by Captain Clarkes V. Wells, who was from Sistersville, Virginia and took his boat south when the Civil War broke out. It was captured by U.S. troops on June 15, 1863, but after the war operated on the Alabama River.
