The Omar Rodriguez Collection of the 1861 Hidalgo Issue continued...

Maravatio to Merida Districts continued...
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
3141 o    12 imageMexico, Mazatlan 8r Green on Red Brown. Neat Mazatlan boxed date stamp cancel (Schatzkes 739), large to huge margins, natural paper fold, Extremely Fine and choice, a very rare stamp with only 220 issued (NF $1,500), a similar example sold in our sale of the collection of Dr. Manuel Iglesias (Sale #114, Lot #402) for $2,100 hammer, with 2002 M.E.P.S.I. certificate.
Scott No. 12; Estimate $2,000 - 3,000.

The 8r Black on Green were printed in parallel to the 8r Black on Brown to combat the illegal use of splits from six larger districts and sent only to those. However, at the end of the issue, with the central post office in disarray, the small balance of the 8r Green stamps on hand was sent in small amounts to 16 other districts including Mazatlan. All those are rarities.

3142     6 imageMexico, Merida ½r Black on Buff. 2 horizontal pairs, on large piece tied by Merida boxed date stamp cancels (Schatzkes 785); vertical file fold affecting one stamp, F.-V.F (NF $600 for off cover singles), ex-E. Sieloff, with 2017 M.E.P.S.I. certificate.
Scott No. 6; Estimate $300 - 400.

All stamps and covers from this district are scarce and have a very low survival rate, probably due to the humid and hot temperature of the region. Moreover, any cover with ½r stamps is scarce because the only rate such stamp paid was for circulars and printed matter so districts received very limited quantities.
