1117       imageClipperton Island, 1895, 1¢-$1.00 Clipperton Island complete set. Ten values, tied by purple three-ring cancels, entered mails with partial purple "San Francisco, Cal. Reg. Div., Mar 23, 1896" cds, additionally franked with 5¢ Bureau + 3¢ Columbian issues (270+232) tied by "San Francisco" registry ovals on legal-size 10¢ Columbian entire with F.M. Petersen & Co. corner card to Altona, Germany, New York transit oval backstamp and "New York" exchange label affixed over three stamps, Altona arrival backstamp; some wear and light soiling, vertical crease at center between stamps, F.-V.F., only 200 sets produced and the only cover bearing the Columbian-Clipperton Island issue combination.
Estimate; $1,500 - 2,000.

A COLORFUL AND RARE COVER WITH AN ENTIRE SET OF THE CLIPPERTON ISLAND STAMPS USED TO GERMANY, THIS NOW BEING THE THIRD COMPLETE SET ON COVER RECORDED.

The Clipperton Island stamps where produced in March 1895 in San Francisco by the local agents of the Oceanic Phosphate Co. that was operating an important guano recovery operation on Clipperton Island, an atoll in the Eastern Pacific Ocean about 1,800 miles from San Francisco. They were intend for employee mail from the island and there were about 150-200 miners there at the time of issue.

1119       imageStait's Despatch, 48 So. 3rd St., Paid. Red circular handstamp on locally addressed printed circular, inside with additional strike of handstamp and a black on yellow W. Stait label calling for contributions to the Cheap Postage Committee, circular calling for recognition to Barnabas Bates and asking for support to the Cheap Postage movement, Very Fine.
Estimate; $200 - 300.

Barnabas Bates, who served as New York's assistant postmaster between 1833-36, later began working for the New York Democratic Party and the Equal Rights Party. He served as an advocate for reduced postal rates, which made public communication possible for a greater number of people. In the 1850's, Bates adopted the Elihu Blurritt practice of using illustrated envelopes to further his reform proposals for America.
