1867 Grilled Issues
LotNo. Symbol CatNo. Lot Description
4050 o    79 image1867, 3¢ rose, A. grill. Segmented cork cancel, typical centering however the perforations are full and complete, F.-V.F., with 1996 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 79; $1,300.

ONE OF THE FEW STAMPS SHOWING FULL AND COMPLETE PERFORATIONS.

The 1867 A Grill was the first experimental grill to be used in the United States, which proved to be a failure, as the all over grill damaged the stamps. It was soon modified into smaller grills and was far more effective. As a result, examples showing intact perforations are very rare and highly sought after.

The Scott catalogue states that, "Values for No. 79 are for Fine-Very Fine examples with minor perf. faults. Examples with complete or virtually complete perforations sell for much more."
