target duplex entering the mails just over two months after handing it over to Wells, Fargo & Co. in San Francisco due to the outbreak of The Indian War, with original enclosure; corner nick at top right and small tear at top, otherwise
Very Fine, a rare overland mail usage showing the temporary suspension in service due to the 1864 Indian War, accompanied by article (Western Express, Sept 2001) by Robert Chandler regarding this cover and the story behind it.
Estimate; $250 - 350.
Early in August of 1864, Indian attacked stagecoaches, freighters, ranches and mail stations in Colorado and Nebraska Territories. As a result, mails along the overland stage route where suspended until September
20th. This cover clearly shows that it was held up during this suspension and was on the first stagecoach after the overland mail was restored.
