China: Late 1930s The Vestiges of China Emergency at Hankow, Wuchang & Hangyang (ie Wuhan City) Japanese military mail postcard set of 16 with original pictorial envelope. This set depicts the scenes of Wuhan City just after the Japanese invasion Oct 1938. As Wuhan was the most important city in central China as its transportation & industrial hub, the Chinese Army defended it fiercely for more than 4 months before it fell. Thus this set of postcards depicting the war ravaged city scenes right after the battle not only serves the propaganda of the undefeated Imperial Japanese Army but also provides fresh & valuable first-hand visual material of the city after the war. China: Late 1930s views of Japanese Occup North China coloured postcard set of 32 with original deluxe silver colour box of issue. The deluxe outer box depicts a Japanese fighter planes hovering over a group of classic Chinese ancient buildings indicating that this large swath of Chinese territory was under the control of the Japanese Army in early WWII. The box has 30 individual postcards & a composite of 2 depicting the 17-arch bridge of Summer Palace. The photos cover northern China provinces inc Peking (Beijing), Tientsin (Tianjing), Shandong & Shanxi. Notably, one depicts a Japanese Army soldier patrolling in the city of Kufow (Qufu), the birth place of Confucius & the most significant cultural holy place in China. Another depicts the Japanese Army seizing control of the Tsingtau (Qingdao) Town Hall, marking the fall of Tsingtau on 10 Jan 1938. An impressive & rare set in such a large size of the time with original box (mostly lost). Silver paper box GC, cards all fresh & clean. China: Late 1930s hustle-bustle of Kwangtung/Canton/Guangdong Province (mainly Canton/Guangzhou City) under Japanese occupation military postcard set of 14. The set depicts the prosperous scenes of happy & relaxed residents of the harbour city of Canton under Japanese occupation. Notably, despite it?s military postcard set, all of them have the stamp reading 'Censored by Central Military Police Force of Canton City, 26 April, 1939'. It shows the strict scrutiny of the Japanese administration as the scale of the war was growing & the combative sides were entering a standoff. Very rare set with censor h/s.
