THE TRANS-ATLANTIC CROSSINGS OF THE "GRAF ZEPPELIN" & THE "HINDENBURG"
A superb collection of flown covers and cards carried by German Airships between 1924 (the forerunners on the Z.R.3 "Los Angeles"), and ending with the tragic destruction of the "Hindenburg" resulting in the loss of so many lives and the end of the dream of large scale commercial airship transportation. The collector has acquired many fine examples, primarily focused on, but not limited to, the flights between Germany and the United States, and every piece adds something different to the fascinating story. The collection is complimented by a library of reference material and associated publications. The intention was always to exhibit, and there is certainly enough material here for that; but circumstances have changed, and the task of telling the story will pass to the next owner. Sieger approx. 40,000 Euro.

108 flown covers and cards; 20 reference books; 4 complete books of cigarette cards; a rare prospectus, with photographs issued for the LZ 126; plus a range of photographs, postcards, and associated items.

ROWLAND HILL SIGNATURE ON POST OFFICE HEADED NOTEPAPER:
1859 (Aug.10) autographed letter sheet to his brother, Frederic Hill, signed "Yours affectionately, Rowland Hill", evidently acknowledging a document which had been left for his attention; "....you will find one of two suggestions I have made in pencil..."

Given Hill's international reputation regarding Post Office reform and the use of stamps for the pre-payment of postage, Hill's service, from 1833 until 1839 as secretary of the South Australian Colonization Commission, is not widely known. The Commission worked successfully to establish a settlement without convicts at what is today Adelaide. The political economist Robert Torrens was chairman of the Commission. Under the South Australia Act 1834, the colony was to embody the ideals and "best qualities of British society", shaped by religious freedom and a commitment to social progress and civil liberties. Hill was made Secretary to the Postmaster General, and then Secretary to the Post Office from 1854 until 1864.
