Very fine.

1864/74, 1 d. rose-red, plate 161, Die II, perf. 14, Large Crown watermark, three horizontal pairs and two singles, tied by clear Dublin "186” duplex cancel (27 February 1875) with adjacent red "PD” to envelope addressed the US Minister to Greece, Meredith Read (1837-1896), in Athens, bearing arrival datestamp on reverse. The franking with some minor faults, of no significance in view of the exceptional scarcity of Irish mail to Greece, with only a few covers recorded. An attractive and important specialist´s item.

1865/67, Large Corner Letters 3 d. rose, plate 4, Large Garter watermark, four singles neatly tied by Belfast "62” duplex cancel (30 October 1865) and paying the 1867 ½ oz. 1 shilling rate (first weight step) to entire letter to Andover near Boston, USA, with adjacent red "21 CENTS” due marking; together with two further entires from the same correspondence, franked with 1867/80 3 d. rose, plate 5, Spray of Rose watermark, illustrating the reduction in tariffs with frankings paying the 1869 6 d. and 1870 3 d. rates. Some adhesives with small faults and creases; despite the imperfections still a fine and scarce trio illustrating three different tariffs for the same weight step.

1865/67, 4 d. vermilion, horizontal pair and single, tied by Belfast "62” duplex cancellation (March 31) with matching framed "REGISTERED BELFAST” alongside to folded registered lettersheet, via Aachen, Lübeck and Denmark to Christiana, Norway, bearing blue crayon "8” (Danish Rigsbank-Skilling) and red "5”. The franking with tiny fault, the entire with two creases clear of the adhesives, still fine. A rare destination for Irish mail.

Sent via Triest (4 April), endorsed "via Brindisi”, and bearing Austrian post office arrival cds on reverse (24 April); subsequently readdressed to Vienna, Austria, with arrival cds (12 May). A lovely and most unusual Irish mail usage.

1869, Four-Penny-Post "4” handstamp, clear strike on envelope to Ottawa, Canada, carried on Allan´s Line Canadian Packet the Peruvian, bearing "NEW ROSS JA 4 69” despatch handstamp and scarce "UNPAID-25” (cents) due marking, equivalent to 12d., the four pence accountancy mark credited to the British (1d. inland postage and 3d., representing one-half of the penalty). Minor peripheral wear, otherwise fine. A rare late usage of the "4” handstamp as a postage due marking on transatlantic mail.

1873/80, Large Coloured Corner Letters 6 d. grey, plate 15, tied by clear Armagh "8” duplex cancel (25 April 1877), paying the correct reduced 6 d. rate to envelope endorsed "Via United States” to Yokohama, Japan, bearing arrival datestamp on reverse (2 July). An extremely rare destination for Irish mail sent to Japan prior to its entry into the UPU (1 July 1877). ProFi has recorded only one other outgoing cover, posted two days earlier from the same correspondence.

1873/80, 1 sh. green, plate 12, perf 14, tied by Belfast "62” duplex cancel (30 december 1876) to entire letter via Southampton to Santa Ana, San Salvador, insufficiently prepaid and intercepted in transit with red "RETURNED FOR DEFICIENT POSTAGE" handstamp and manuscript ”6" (pence) deficiency, the penalty of 1 shilling only partly paid on reverse with 1864/79 1 d. rose-red, plate 182, Die 2, Large Crown watermark in block of six (LK/NL) separated in half upon opening and obliterated in black ink. The 1 shilling with corner missing, the 1d. adhesives with minor faults, otherwise fine. A very rare cover, combining a rare due marking with a most elusive destination.

1837/1990 (ca.), Postage Due on Foreign Incoming & Outgoing Mail, research collection of over 145 covers and cards,  illustrating a wide range of Postage Due stamp and marking usages, and showing the treatment of underpaid correspondence with an abundance of foreign destinations, including USA, Greenland, Denmark, Egypt or Temganyka, as well as incoming mail from India, Gold Coast, Austria, Jamaica, Germany, etc. Better items with 1869 underfranked envelope bearing 4 d. orange tied by Belfast "62” duplex cancel (1 July 1869) with "INSUFFICIENTLY STAMPED" handstamp to Dresden, Saxony; 1906 ½ d. green postal stationery card used with "CORK JU 2 06” to Tokyo, Japan, taxed and returned to sender, and more. Except for the occasional fault, overall in good condition, neatly mounted and expertly described on exhibit pages, in 2 albums.

Some better items throughout, including 1849 entire letter bearing 1847/54 1 sh. green, cut into at right (SG-Nr. 54/56), tied by Belfast "62” barred lozenge, with matching despatch handstamp on reverse, and showing "PAID” and "5 CENTS” due marking, sent to New York; also a fine duo comprising 1850 entire letter bearing 1847/54 I sh. green, horizontal pair, cut into at top (SG-Nr. 54/56), correctly paying the 2 shilling rate, together with an 1858 stampless entire prepaid 2 shilling in cash at the counter; together with some Forwarded mail, multiple frankings, and more. A marvellous selection, in somewhat mixed condition, almost all neatly mounted and expertly described on exhibit album pages.
