Wells, Fargo & Co, $1.00 red Pony Express, margins close to touching, affixed to 10 c. star die postal stationery entire with Wells, Fargo & Co. printed frank in red, adhesive tied by bold strike of "Pony Express / San Francisco / Aug 7” Running Pony datestamp in blue, indicia cancelled by green "St. Joseph MO.” c.d.s. (19 Aug), to Athens, New York, stamp has been lifted and replaced, and the Running Pony cancellation neatly improved in places, yet an iconic postmark on a most attractive and scarce cover, one of four recorded examples carried on this eastward trip of the Pony Express; with 1965 Philatelic Foundation certificate. Whiting & Co's Feather River Express, Paid, 1866 (July 11), banner frank in black on 3c. Nesbitt postal stationery cover to Quincy, struck with faint blue double-circle Marysville c.d.s., likely of Wells Fargo, with which Whiting & Co's met in Marysville, reverse with sender's datestamp of the tobacco & dry goods importers M. Marcuse & Co. slightly reduced at right and repaired, some overall discolouration, but scarce.
