1080 cover   imageWorld War I, 1912/1916, naval archive of Lieutenant William McKinstry Maitland-Dougall, R.C.N., first Canadian naval officer to command a submarine, historically significant and comprehensive archive comprising 37 original covers and cards, the vast majority retaining their original contents, mostly accompanied by full typed transcriptions, original contemporary photographs and 15 period postcards, including real photo views and early submarine subjects, organized and annotated. The correspondence relates to Sub-Lieutenant / Lieutenant William McKinstry Maitland-Dougall, R.C.N. (1895-1918), a member of the pioneer Class of 1911 at the Royal Naval College of Canada in Halifax, who made naval history as the first Canadian officer to command a submarine, serving in HMS D1 and HMS D3. The correspondence traces his career from early pre-war training mail at Halifax, including mail to Ucluelet, Vancouver Island, and incoming correspondence addressed to him aboard HMS Berwick of the West Atlantic Squadron, redirected through Bermuda, Barbados and Jamaica with Ireland Island, Bermuda and Barbados postal markings.

The wartime correspondence opens with an August 2, 1914 letter on Canadian Pacific Railway "En Route" stationery, dispatched only hours before Britain entered the war, followed by an August 4, 1914 postcard written from the Royal Naval Volunteer Barracks at Esquimalt on the day war was declared. The mobilization of Canada’s Pacific naval forces traced through his service aboard the cruiser HMCS Rainbow, gunboat HMS Algerine and submarine tender HMS Shearwater, with historically-significant discussion of Canada’s first submarines, CC-1 and CC-2, including barometric-pressure log recordings made aboard CC-1 and Maitland-Dougall's personal thoughts of entering the submarine service. Further correspondence follows postings at Naval Headquarters in Ottawa, including an account of skating at Rideau Hall with Governor General the Duke of Connaught and Princess Patricia, examination duty on the St. Lawrence aboard HMCS Canada / Speedy, and service aboard HMCS Niobe, with early censor markings.
]
The overseas portion is represented by official printed letterheads including H.M. Submarine E5, H.M.S. Dolphin Submarine Depot, Gosport, with White Ensign device, H.M.S. Maidstone Submarine Depôt, tender HMS Alecto, Navigation School, H.M. Dockyard Portsmouth, and Royal Naval Barracks Portsmouth, headed H.M. Submarine D3, with covers bearing naval dumb or mute obliterators and censor handstamps. The letters record North Sea submarine patrols, Zeppelin and aeroplane daylight raids on Lowestoft, an eyewitness account of trench charges at La Bassée, an official British Columbia Government forwarding letter from Premier Sir Richard McBride, and correspondence from Maitland-Dougall’s brother Hamish, serving with the 103rd Battalion, C.E.F. Also included are an original photograph of Maitland-Dougall standing on a submarine conning tower, together with postcards depicting HMS Berwick, HMS Drake with submarine D1, British A-, B-, C- and E-class submarines, and the beached German submarine U-118 at Hastings.

An extraordinary archive documenting the early Royal Canadian Navy and the emergence of submarine warfare. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3) (Image 4) (Image 5) (Image 6) (Image 7) (Image 8) (Image 9)
