Stamps & Postal History of British North America continued...

Nova Scotia continued...
LotNo. Symbol Cat No. Lot Description
779 cover   image1891 (November 3), illustrated Italian decorative arts dealer’s bill of sale made out to Sir Charles Tupper, attractive receipt of Sarfatti & Ci., franked with two 5c Italian revenue stamps and recording Tupper’s purchase of several antiques, including two chairs and two bronze horses, to be delivered to his address in London, where Tupper was serving as the Canadian High Commissioner, the ornate letterhead illustrated with cherubs and decorative motifs; usual filing folds, otherwise fine, an unusual and charming document relating to the Nova Scotian Father of Confederation and future Prime Minister of Canada.

Sir Charles Tupper (1821-1915) was Premier of Nova Scotia, a Father of Confederation and one of the principal advocates for bringing Nova Scotia into the Canadian confederation. After entering federal politics he held several senior cabinet portfolios and, from 1883, served as Canada’s High Commissioner in London, the position he held when this receipt was issued in 1891; he later became Prime Minister of Canada in 1896, serving the shortest term in Canadian history. Prince Edward Island
LotNo. Symbol Cat No. Lot Description
782 cover   image1847 (April 9), privately-carried cover from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, to London, England, franked on arrival with Great Britain 1d red, with original contents written from St. Avards, carried outside the mails to London where an imperforate 1d red was affixed and tied by circular “63” numeral cancellation, addressed to Gray’s Inn with arrival backstamp (15 May), some light tone spotting in places, otherwise fine, a rare usage of a Great Britain 1d red on mail originating in British North America, with contents of particular interest to the history of Prince Edward Island.

The enclosed letter was written by Robert Bruce Stewart, one of the central figures in the Island’s nineteenth-century Land Question. Written from St. Avards only months after his arrival on the Island, Stewart describes his family’s first winter and the severe cold, praises the Island as “one of the most healthy spots in the whole world,” then discusses the management of his family’s extensive landholdings, referring to upwards of 90,000 acres, his efforts to make his own 20,000-acre township profitable, and more than 100 “squatters” permitted by former agents to occupy land without leases, grants or payment. He recounts assembling the settlers at the Court House to explain their position and his intentions, and discusses the matter with Lieutenant Governor Sir Henry Vere Huntley and members of his Council, from whom he reports receiving considerable kindness and support. A valuable first-hand account of Stewart’s attempts to readminister his estates at an early stage of the conflict that would come to dominate nineteenth-century Prince Edward Island politics.
