623 cover   image1902/1917, American Bank Note Company illustrated advertising card, 124 x 182mm, exceptionally attractive engraved card with beaver illustration and large AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY heading, the reverse depicting the firm’s HEAD OFFICE & WORKS on Wellington Street in Ottawa and listing General Manager J.A. Machado and P.B. Toller, Manager, Toronto; rare and very fine; ex Wellburn.

The American Bank Note Company was reorganized as the Canadian Bank Note Company in 1923; J.A. Machado assumed the position of General Manager at the company’s 224 Wellington Street headquarters in Ottawa in 1902, while P.B. Toller served as Toronto Manager from 1902 to 1917. The Wellington Street building illustrated on the card no longer survives, having later been demolished during redevelopment of the Parliamentary precinct. (Image 1)

A note on the reverse of the electro plate essay states, "Received these from impression of the surface from Mr. Savage 5/3/34." Mr. Robert Savage (1868–1943) was a master portrait and vignette engraver for the American Bank Note Company (ABNC). Included is a blue Canadian Postal Note on unwatermarked paper (likely a proof) along with a portion of an issued Postal Note, in black. Gen'l" and "Post Office Department, Canada / Dead Letter Office / At Ottawa", handstamped "Recovered by divers from wreck of S.S. Empress of Ireland", to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Dover, England, with c.d.s. receiver (13 Jan, 1915) on front, further c.d.s. on reverse (12 Jan), some edge creasing, else fine.

The Canadian Pacific liner RMS Empress of Ireland sank in the St. Lawrence River near Rimouski in the early hours of May 29, 1914, after colliding in dense fog with the Norwegian collier Storstad. The ship went down in roughly fourteen minutes, with 1,012 lives lost, making it one of the deadliest peacetime maritime disasters in Canadian history. (Image 1) (Image 2)
