520 cover   image1849 (April 5), double-rate transatlantic cover from London, England, to Quebec, carried by Cunard Europa via Halifax, postmarked London (5 Apr) and Liverpool (6 Apr), carried on Europa’s sixth voyage, departing Liverpool 7 Apr and arriving Halifax 17 Apr, the letter sent in closed-bag mail from Liverpool to Quebec via Halifax, initially rated 1/-, subsequently re-rated 2/- and 2/4d sterling collect, and finally 2/7½d currency collect for the double rate; uncommonly fresh, an especially interesting late example of the Halifax routing, this being the last voyage on the Liverpool-Halifax-New York run on which the normal Canadian mails were carried in closed bags via Halifax; ex Steinhart, mounted on his album page. This cover is addressed to C.F. (Casimir-Fidèle) Papineau, son of Denis-Benjamin Papineau, and nephew of the famed Louis-Joseph Papineau. Casimir-Fidèle carried on various commercial activities in Peru, Argentina, and Uruguay. (Image 1) (Image 2)
