Stamps & Postal History of Canada

Pre-Stamp & Stampless Postal History
LotNo. Symbol Cat No. Lot Description
501 cover   image1676 (January 4), New France judicial decree naming Mississippi explorer Louis Jolliet, single-page manuscript document issued at Quebec by Louis-Théandre Chartier de Lotbinière, Lieutenant-General of the Prévôté of Quebec, boldly signed “L. Chartier” at foot, arising from a complaint made at approximately ten o’clock the previous evening by Louis du Moustier, Sieur de Montreuil, Gentleman-in-Ordinary of the King’s Chamber and former Musketeer of His Majesty, together with merchant Claude Bocquet, formally reported by royal notary and court clerk Gilles Rageot against an exceptional group of early Quebec figures including Charles Bazire, his servant Charles Macart, Pierre Bécard de Grandville, Louis Jolliet, the wives of Bazire and Jolliet, Marie Couillard, wife of Jacques de Lalande, and Marie Bissot, Chartier ordering Bazire, Macart, Grandville and Jolliet personally summoned to appear before him at four o’clock that afternoon to be heard and interrogated regarding the complaint; written on laid paper in a fine hand, folds, staining, and edge faults, but remarkably complete and otherwise well preserved for document of this period; among the earliest documents originating in present-day Canada in private hands.

The decree was issued less than two years after Jolliet’s return from his celebrated 1673 Mississippi expedition with Jacques Marquette, and only three months after his October 1675 marriage to Claire-Françoise Bissot; Jolliet was one of the colony’s most prominent explorers, cartographers and merchants, while Bazire was Receiver General of the King’s Domain, merchant, seigneur and former agent of the Compagnie des Indes occidentales, Bécard de Grandville belonged to the colonial military establishment, and the Macart, Couillard and Bissot families were connected with some of Quebec’s earliest commercial and founding families. The judicial officials were significant figures in New France: Louis-Théandre Chartier de Lotbinière served as lieutenant-general of the Prévôté de Québec after earlier holding senior offices in the colony’s judiciary, while Gilles Rageot, who recorded the complaint, was both clerk of the Quebec court and a royal notary, the first notary in New France to receive his commission directly from the Crown.
