Following a request from the Nassau postmaster, post offices outside the Bahamas could obtain Bahamas Special Delivery stamps from Nassau for use on mail requiring special delivery there. 427 cover   imageEgypt, 1918 (May 17), first-class letter from Winnipeg to the Malta Artillery with the Egyptian Expeditionary Force, Chamber of Commerce Headquarters for Army and Navy envelope franked with 1c and 2c Admirals, tied by Winnipeg machine cancellation (17 May), paying the 3c first-ounce overseas letter rate, addressed to Capt. W.R. Gatt, Malta Artillery, Sultan Hussein Club, Alexandria, with triangular PASSED BY CENSOR / No. 3147 military censor handstamp, reverse with Alexandria c.d.s. receiver (29 Jun), some light toning, but a desirable military destination in the Middle East.

The addressee, Captain W. R. Gatt, was serving with the Royal Malta Artillery detachment attached to the Egyptian Expeditionary Force at Alexandria, where Maltese artillerymen assisted with the city’s coast-defence establishment. The Sultan Hussein Club was named for Sultan Hussein Kamel, and was a prominent social centre used by members of the city’s British expatriate community. (Image 1) (Image 2)
