AN EXCEPTIONAL WORLD AIRMAIL RARITY

1927 (May 20), ‘De Pinedo’ 60c black on cover to Italy, tied by St. John’s machine cancellation with Trepassey split-ring (21 May) below, addressed to the Postmaster of Rome, typed endorsement "By Airmail, from Trepassey" at top, reverse with Roma Centro c.d.s. arrival backstamp (16 Jun), trivial staple holes and two small adhesive remnants on reverse, the cover lovely and fresh, a desirable airmail rarity from this iconic flight, backstamped Klein, with 2011 Eichele certificate.

One of approximately 225 envelopes bearing the special De Pinedo stamp carried on the historic 1927 transatlantic flight of Marchese Francesco de Pinedo aboard the Santa Maria II, linking Newfoundland with Italy in one of the most celebrated long-distance flights of the inter-war period. Of the 300 stamps originally overprinted for this flight, four were destroyed due to damage and 66 were reserved for official presentations, including to De Pinedo. The balance were used on flown covers, of which only 75 to 100 used or on-cover examples remain. (Image 1) (Image 2) (Image 3)
