430 cover C1 imageONE OF THE MOST STORIED RARITIES OF TWENTIETH CENTURY AEROPHILATELY

1919 (April 12), St. John’s, Newfoundland to London, England, franked with well-centred 3c red brown Caribou with "First Trans-Atlantic Air Post / May 1919" overprint, tied by clear St. John’s machine cancel, typed "BY AEROPLANE" endorsement at top left, reverse with British Post Office "Found Open and Officially Sealed" label cancelled by London (30 May) c.d.s., central file fold and light uniform aging, a desirable example of this world airmail rarity; with 2023 Greene Foundation certificate.

The Hawker flight, piloted by Harry Hawker and Kenneth Mackenzie-Grieve, ended in a controlled mid-ocean ditching after 14 hours due to an engine overheat. The mail was recovered by the Danish steamer Mary and eventually delivered to the Daily Mail in London. This recovery process and subsequent handling likely account for the detached back flap and the necessity of the official seal. Of the 200 stamps overprinted, 18 were destroyed as defective, and it is believed only 95 used examples survive, with a significantly smaller number remaining on flown covers.
