Italian States (Modena)
LotNo. Symbol Cat No. Lot Description
684   imageModena, Francesco I d’Este (1629–1658), Duke of Modena and Reggio, signed letter, dated 6 October 1656, written “dall’Armata di Pontestura,” bearing a blind embossed seal and addressed to the Marchese Ghironi Francavilla, announcing “...il nemico marcia su Livorno...,” (“…the enemy is advancing on Livorno…”), a small portion of a rear flap missing not affecting the text, a very interesting and rare contemporary military letter.

Francesco I d’Este was allied with France and Piedmont and commanded both French forces and his own troops during the mid-17th-century conflicts in northern Italy; in 1656–57 he campaigned successfully in Lombardy and Piedmont, notably at Valenza and Alessandria, making this letter a contemporary witness to his active military leadership.
