The Andaman Islands are an archipelago in the Bay of Bengal, long inhabited by indigenous peoples and intermittently visited by European powers before coming under British control in the late 18th century. They are best known historically as the site of the British penal colony established after the Indian Rebellion of 1857, centred on Port Blair, which played a significant role in colonial administration. 669 cover   imageBurma: 1857 (October/November), registered cover from Narayan to Calcutta, franked with 4a Queen Victoria on front and ½a pair on reverse, all stamps tied by octagonal Narayan obliterator B/136 (Cooper Type 7), the front additionally struck with red boxed REGISTERED handstamp, reverse with Rangoon P.O. red double-circle transit (26 Oct) and Calcutta red double-circle receiver (5 Nov 1857, month inverted), opened on three sides for display, a fresh and desirable example of this elusive cancellation.

According to Cooper, the Narayan Post Office closed in October 1857, making this a potentially last-recorded usage of the B/136 cancellation, an important and rare registered cover carried via Rangoon to Calcutta. (Image 1) (Image 2)
