539 cover   image1904 (May 18) Postage Due Cover, Peking to Shanghai. Cover franked with brown ½c Coiling Dragon issue, cancelled by clear bilingual single-circle PEKING 18 MAY 1904 datestamp. The franking was deemed insufficient on despatch, resulting in the application of an ochre 1c “POSTAGE DUE” adhesive and large “T” handstamp, both tied by the same Peking cancellation. The envelope bears the printed corner card of the Compagnie Impériale des Chemins de Fer Chinois (Imperial Chinese Railway Company), Ligne de Pékin à Hankow, and is addressed to Shanghai, adding strong institutional and commercial interest. An attractive and well-documented example of early Chinese postage-due practice. Shallow vertical crease, otherwise sound and well presented. (Image 1)
