CLOUD D’ALGERIE ORAN c.d.s. (4 Jan 1901) and bearing the bold red single-line NAUFRAGIE DE LA RUSSIE handstamp denoting recovery from maritime disaster, reverse with delayed transit and delivery markings including Marseille Départ (26 Jan), Dijon Côte-d’Or (27 Jan) and Semur-en-Auxois arrival (27 Jan 1901), the adhesive lost as commonly encountered on wreck-recovered mail, the envelope showing heavy water exposure, staining and surface abrasion as commonly found, a desirable wreck cover.

The packet boat Russie was wrecked off Faraman near Marseilles on 7 January 1901 during severe weather; all passengers and crew were safely evacuated, the vessel later refloated and brought into Marseilles harbour on 24 January, with the mails recovered by divers and subsequently forwarded.
