923 CVR/PC Worldwide imageGroup of 38 Interesting Covers and Cards from the Estate of Robert Hasslewood, each item was purchased separately from Canadian auction houses and bidboards for a total of just over $3,500 and were collected for each having an interesting aspect. Many are Christmas-related, either mailed on Christmas day, or having WWII Christmas themes, such as Christmas seals, postmarks, stamps, etc. Also saw some early stampless covers (as far back as the 1700s) as well as some non-Christmas material, with better frankings, rated, destinations from a number of countries. The material ranges from primarily the 1930s onward with mail delivered by helicopter, submarine, lighter than air, clipper, ship, canoe, cable car, runner, rocket, among others. We note two Hindenburg covers including a May 12-14, 1936 Lakehurst-Frankfurt flight with Lakehurst violet cachet and Frankfurt backstamp (Frost #129-6b, c.v. $50), and August 1, 1936 Olympic flight Frankfurt-Berlin round trip (Frost #129-19a, c.v. $50). 931 CVR Denmark imageGroup of 8 Interesting Denmark Military Covers from World War One and Two, with a 1915 prisoner of war letter from Aurillac to Ronnede. Aurillac was a special prisoner of war camp for Danish-minded South Jutland in the German army. The lot includes a WW1 cover to the Moscow Bureau aid committee for prisoners of war, along with a soldier correspondence card, Red Cross prisoner of war shipment cover, with covers having various censor tapes and markings. A good lot for the postal history collector, as the owner collected interesting and unusual material. All covers scanned online, overall fine to very fine. 932 CVR Egypt imageExtensive Group of 48 Censored Covers from Egypt, 1939 to 1953, starting with World War II Egypt to England, total of 13 covers postmarked 1939 (2), 1940 (1), 1942 (6) and 1943 (4). All have one or more censor markings, 6 have censor labels, 5 are airmail covers. Provenance: Byam Egypt Collection (lot 911) sold by Robson Lowe Ltd, October 24-25, 1961. At the time, the Byam collection was the best philatelic collection of Egypt. Next is Egypt to USA, with a total of 19 covers postmarked 1940 (3), 1941 (3), 1942 (3), 1943 (2), 1944 (5), February 1945 (1) and 2 have illegible postmarks (but are of war years). All have one or more censor markings, 17 have censor labels (2 have 2 different labels), 15 are airmail covers. Two covers have official stamps. One is registered. Condition varies with some tears, one tape repaired on back and one cover opened on 3 sides. Then we have Egypt to Canada, with a total of 11 covers postmarked 1939 (2), 1943 (2), 1944 (3), January and February 1945 (4). All covers have one or more censor markings, 5 have censor labels (one has two different labels), 5 are airmail covers (including two air letters with content). One is registered and one is a small but interesting cover. One opened on 3 sides. Many covers are addressed to Victoria, B.C. Also two covers from interned Italian civilians in Egypt, (front and back flap only) dated 1944 with censor markings and censor label. Both have return addresses on back flap. One is from Italian Internee Camp no.2 at Fayed and the other is from Camp no. 19 at Geneifa. Both are addressed to Port-Said. Last but not least we have post-war covers from Egypt, with a total of 13 covers postmarked 1945 (7), 1950 (1), 1953 (1) and 4 have illegible postmarks. Covers are addressed to Canada (5), England (3), USA (1), Holland (1), Lebanon (1), Switzerland (1) and Germany (1). All have one or more censor markings, 8 have censor labels, 7 are airmail covers (including one air letter with content). One is opened on 3 sides. One is registered. Two of the covers to England come from the Byam sale (see above). Also includes ephemera, with 5 pieces with stamps and markings cut out from covers (Egypt), a photocopy of article: Gabriel Boulad. La Censure postale en Egypte pendant la Guerre de 1939-1945. From L’Orient Philatélique. October 1946. p. 629-638. Major article describing the different censor markings and labels used in Egypt during the war. Also William BYAM. Egypt: third issue, 1872 and 1874/75. 3 page offprint on wove paper from the London Philatelist, plus a 6 page advertisement for the 1961 sale of Byam’s Egypt collection at Robson Lowe and a Christmas card signed by Byam. Usual faults, else overall fine or better. A rare opportunity for the specialist, or dealer to acquire such scarce material. We note 33 covers, many registered, addressed to the Military District Headquarters in Vienna, Austria, all having various feldpost and mail handling station handstamps, with mail from units stationed in Poland, Hungary and the Balkans (identified by the owner). The lot also includes 19 military airmail covers, all franked with Scott #MC1 Junkers 52 Transport stamp (including a few double franked covers), appearing to be flown to Germany. 935 CVR Germany imageBetter Collection of WWII Prisoner of War and Concentration Camp Mail, etc. includes 49 various items including covers to or from a wide variety of different camps, camp photographs, parcel receipts with General Government stamps, and more, most of which are censored, with many different military markings. Saw a cover mailed from an Italian prisoner of War camp Ferramonti di Tarsia (censor tape on back), a free-franked KZ cover with contents (priced at $800), several covers priced between $125 and $200, one priced at $400, etc. One of the key items of the collection is an original Jewish prisoner arm band, with Star of David sewn over a larger piece of cloth (cut down from the prisoner's striped clothing) bearing the prisoner's number (1180?). All pages scanned online.
