2 ng 1 image1851 3d Red Beaver Imperforate on Laid Paper, unused (with trace of original gum), with bright colour and sharp impression. The stamp possesses three large margins, and the bottom one just touches the outer frameline at right, fine-very fine.

A very rare unused example of Canada’s first stamp, as one census of mint and unused Three Penny Beaver on laid paper. Three Penny Beavers puts the number at about 20. Although this might be a little bit low, many of these mint and unused stamps are cut into or have faults, and some are in institutional collections. It is likely that fewer than a handful of sound number ones are available to private collectors. A rare opportunity for the mint Canada collector.

Accompanied by a 1959 Royal Philatelic Society certificate issued to W. E. Lea, Esq. (Scan 1) (Scan 2) (All Scans)

9 O 2 image1851 6d Slate Violet Consort Imperforate on Laid Paper, a used horizontal pair with light, centrally struck target cancels. An exceptional quality pair, with its fresh, bright colour and large, even margins all around. Adding to these desirable attributes is the fact that the vertical laid lines are quite clear, and there is also a horizontal vergé line across both stamps. Extremely fine, and surely one of the finest pairs in existence, catalogue value is irrelevant.

Accompanied by a 2008 Greene Foundation certificate.

Certainly one of the greatest showpieces of this collection, and a great worldwide rarity.

16 nh 3 image1851 12d Black Queen Victoria Imperforate on Laid Paper, a mint single with large sheet margin at right, possessing full original gum and never hinged, very fine.

Definitely the star attraction of this collection, being one of only two examples of this stamp with original never hinged gum, the other being the "Black Empress" which sold for US$425,000 (plus buyer's premium) at Spink New York in 2011. The stamp offered here is the "sister" of the magnificent mint sheet margin example sold by Sparks Auctions in 2017 for C$327,000, as it was formerly located just below it on the sheet, and was for a long time the bottom stamp of a famous sheet margin vertical pair. Only 1,450 were sold, and of those the Siegel census records only 17 mint singles with original gum, plus 4 pairs.

A first class world rarity, and if you are working on completing a mint never hinged collection of Canada, this is a unique opportunity to acquire what is one of Canada’s rarest mint never hinged stamps. Catalogue value is for original gum only, and does not factor a premium for never hinged which should rightly be accorded to this superlative stamp.

Provenance:
This is the bottom stamp of the Charles Lathrop Pack vertical pair sold as lot 26 on Dec. 6, 1944 by Harmer Rooke in New York;
Robert Lyman, who apparently bought the pair at a Mar. 11, 1959 Robert Siegel sale in New York, and who then cut the pair into two singles;
Andrew Holtz, who bought it from a client of the above ca. 1986, and whose name appears on one of the accompanying certificates;
Arnold Nyman, who bought it from Holtz at a stamp show in Helsinki, Finland in 1987;
Saskatoon Stamp Centre, who bought it at a David Feldman auction in 2008;
Current owner, who bought it from above in same year.

Accompanied by a 1986 Greene Foundation certificate issued to A. G. Holtz, as well as a fresh 2022 Greene Foundation certificate.

17 og 4a image1853 3d Brown Red Beaver Imperforate, mint with full original gum, lightly hinged. An outstandingly fresh stamp, with bright colour and crisp impression, not to mention its four large margins, extremely fine. A lovely example with tremendous eye appeal.

19 og 4d image1852 3d Orange Red Beaver Imperforate on Thin paper, mint with full original gum, lightly hinged. The stamp has four well clear to large margins and bright colour, and shows light natural wrinkling, caused by the gum crackling, typical of this thin paper, not mentioned in the certificate. Very fine.
