1851 3d red
Heraldic Imperforate, a used pair with a scarce and good part of a "COLONIAL EXPRESS MAIL / ST JOHN, N.B. / SEP 5" c.d.s. postmark in red. Margins are well clear to cut into, still a nice postmark used to privately carry mail to Boston by Favor's
Express. The small handful of examples we have seen are free strikes on cover, and thus on-stamp examples must be rare. (Scan a) |

1860 5c
Connell Plate Proof in Brown, a full sheet of 100, printed on wove paper, with trimmed margins all around (sold this way from the ABN Archives sale). Position 60 has the major re-entry (especially in the left 5, catalogue number 5Pvii), as does
position 13 (catalogue 5Pviii) and position 61 (catalogue 5Pix). All four corner stamps have faults, including thins, and three of them have been poorly torn away, and two have been re-hinged into place. We believe this happened when the sheet was
removed from its original card backing. Still a very fine and extremely rare sheet. By the 1950s, only two of these sheets had survived, including one owned by Nicholas Argenti, and both of them were broken up sometime before 1990. Five more sheets
were offered in the 1990 American Bank Note Co. Archives sale in New York, and of those we believe that this may be the only surviving intact one. (Scan a) |
