Type VII; 1945, bold strike of the cachet in red ties GB 1d
George VI to envelope addressed to English collector M Kershaw, Very Fine, this cover left Tristan on Oct 11 1945 on "RMS Darro"; During WW II, the military censor on Tristan (from Aug 1940) was issued a red ink pad for use with the "tombstone"
censor mark which remained on the island after the war. The Type VII cachet was applied in red by error by the wartime censor who used the red ink pad instead of blue by mistake for the cachet. It is thought that only 6-10 of the Kershaw covers, and
no others, received this red cachet. (see "Ice Cap News", Vol. 27, Whole No. 151, pg 18) (Image 1)

Type VIII; 1949, fair strike ties GB 2½d Silver Wedding to
envelope addressed to England, oval "T" and "1½d" due markings with GB ½d, 1d Dues affixed and tied by Richmond 6 SP 49 cds cancels, Very Fine; the Type VIII cachet was supplied by Allan Crawford when he returned on May 8 1946.rnThe Sept 6 1949
arrival date is significantly later than the last known use of the Type VIII cachet (departed on "HMSAS Transvaal" on Jan 28 1949) and is possibly an unauthorized use that could have departed with "MV Pequena" on Apr 2 1949 (no other ships at Tristan
from April 2-Sept 17) so there is no direct match with the arrival date. It is perhaps more likely that the late date is due to a postal delay, though to date no other delay covers are known (Image 1)
