Private "Cutress" Handstamp, 1936, two covers, each with
"Tristan da Cunha" handstamp over a Type V cachet, each addressed to "G.P. Cutress" in England and charged 1½d due, one cover franked with ½d, 1d Victoria Jubilee issue (demonetized at the time and hence postmaster charged the postage due), Very
Fine, each cover left the island on "SS Harmala", the franked cover signed Sismondo and with his 2004 certificate rnFor many years it was assumed this marking was a third version of the Durban handstamp. However, recent research has shown that, apart
from all known covers being addressed to Mr Cutress, the typesetting of the letters is different than the Durban cachet. Also, it is always applied over any Tristan cachets. This leads to the conclusion that the cachet was Mr Cutress's own cachet,
possibly modelled after the Durban handstamp, and was applied post-delivery in the UK. (Image 1)
