He lost his White House position in a scandal when he accepted an expensive vacuña coat. Signed typewritten letter to Mr. Burrus E. Beard dated February 25, 1953; also includes the cover it was mailed in.

The son of Mellon family patriarch Thomas Mellon, he established a vast business empire before moving into politics. He served as United States Secretary of the Treasury from March 9, 1921, to February 12, 1932, under Harding, Coolidge and Hoover presiding over the boom years of the 1920s and the Wall Street Crash of 1929. 5   imageSeward, William H., (1801-1872), an American politician who served as U.S. Secretary of State under Presidents Lincoln and Johnson from 1861 to 1869, and earlier served as governor of New York and as a United States senator. Free franked letter dated Dec. 6 1858 (Washington DC c.d.s. cancel) with his notations at the side requesting what appears to be a reply by Dec. 9, 1858; so this letter is actually signed twice by him during his time as a U.S. Senator.
