Map and Provisional Issues - Scott #85-88
LotNo. Symbol Cat No. Lot Description
118 E/P 85E imageThe Sir Sandford Fleming Rejected Imperial Penny Post Essay, one of three original cabinet card photographs submitted by Sir Sandford Fleming to William Mulock (then Postmaster General), accompanied by the original letter (written on Office of the High Commissioner of Canada letterhead) sent to Fleming by Mulock (with his signature) to thank him. The card measures 110 x 155 mm overall, and is signed on back by Fleming, with "Original Photograph / July 1898 / S.F." notation. It is denominated 3 cents instead of the eventual 2 cents the Empire Rate would become, as it was submitted just before the July 1898 London conference where the lower 2 cents rate was advocated. Two important historic documents between two of Canada's most important philatelic personalities, and a must have for any serious Map stamp collector. Rare, with one example in the National Archives of Canada, and only one other in private hands. Ex Bain, Fawn, Lunn. (Scan 1) (Scan 2) (Scan 3) (All Scans)
