609 CVR 27a image6c Large Queen (x4) on 1871 Short paid Cover to Norway, a "Toronto, Grey and Bruce Railway" envelope mailed from Toronto on OCT.5.1871 to Christiania Norway "via Québec, Liverpool", with receiver on back and OCT.25 red London transit on front. Soon after it was mailed, the cover was sent to the Dead letter Office (OCT.7) and received a "Returned-For / Postage" handstamp on back, with manuscript "over 1/2 oz - 32c, 20c due" and stamps were added. Currently, the cover shows four 6c yellow brown Large Queens, each with segmented corks, but there appears to be some of the same segmented corks and one of the Toronto c.d.s. underneath, so it is unclear as to which stamps were placed before or after the DLO markings. There is a different type of "Returned / For / Postage" handstamp on front (presumably applied in London) with a blue crayon "2" and a red crayon "16", which denotes that there is an 8c underpayment (double deficiency) as the rate should have been 32c and is franked 24c. Opening tears at top, still a very interesting rate confusion and destination. 6 Large Queen covers to Norway are recorded by Wayne Smith.
