"Adjacent Rate" on an 1870 Cover, mailed from Cayuga CW on JUN.9.1870 to Caledonia, franked with a 2c deep green Large Queen (short perfs at top, tied by concentric rings cancel) paying the "county" or "adjacent" rate (there are roughly 10 miles
between the two towns). Arfken notes in part "The postal guides make no reference to this exceptional rate. The arrangements may have been informal between the two local postmasters involved.". A replaced backflap does not detract from this otherwise
very fine cover and interesting rate. The Wayne Smith census records only 7 such usages.
