but wrecked on the Retarrier Ledges, Isles of Scilly (England) with the majority of those on board killed. 63 bags of mail from New Zealand for Great Britain were loaded at New York of which 27 were lost. Rare, five examples from New Zealand

New Zealand: Crash and Wreck Mail: 1945 (Apr. 19) airmail envelope to Army P.O. “308” (Solomon Islands) franked 2d. and tied by Hobsonville Air Force c.d.s. Carried on Royal New Zealand Air Force flight that
crashed at Piva North (Bougainville) four days later and endorsed “Salvaged from Hudson/ A/C crashed Piva/Airstrip, Bougainville/Approx 0900hrs 23/4/45/1 man saved/rest (4) burnt/ A/C NoNZ2012”. The only example of mail from this incident recorded.

New Zealand: Crash and Wreck Mail: 1963 (July 2) charred window envelope franked 21/2d. tied by Auckland machine cancellation. Carried by N.Z. National Airways Corporation “Hastings” from Auckland to Taurange
encountering poor weather en route the following day and crashing after hitting a rock face near Mount Ngatamahinerua with all on board killed. 168 letters were recovered though only eight are recorded with no explanatory procedures followed.
