Malta: Army and Navy Concession Rate Mail: 1878 (Aug. 31) reduced local wrapper to Casal Zebbug franked 1864-79 1d. plate 210 and tied by “A25” duplex, an invalid and overpaid franking for local mail (for which
the Malta ½d. first issue had been intended) but apparently accepted without penalty, this possibly explained by the presence of British and Indian troops (as well as Maltese attachments) en route to Cyprus. Very rare and highly unusual. Photo. (Image1)

Malta: Wavy Line Cancellations and Datestamps: 1855 (May 29) envelope (address panel lightly cleaned) to Gibraltar franked 1854 1d. red-brown on blued paper Die I Alphabet II reserve plate 5 (3, incl. a pair) each
with the rectangular ‘wavy line’ cancellation applied on mail at Malta in transit and representing the officer’s concessionary rate from Crimea to Great Britain via Marseille. Rated “5”(d) at lower left for the onward transmission from Malta to
Gibraltar. The cover is in the hand of Colonel Arthur Taylor of the Royal Artillery at Sevastopol and is addressed to Major General Sir Robert Gardiner, Governor of Gibraltar. Illustrated in “Stamp Collecting” (Oct. 23 1975) following its discovery.
An exhibition centrepiece, the wavy line cancellations on cover being the benchmark for any truly outstanding collection of Malta. Photo.
